Nixon Caesar

The Hook by Brave New World Repertory Theatre

Projection of Pete Panto who inspired the play
  • The Hook 8-25 June by Brave New World Repertory Theatre (8th is a preview night), using the gangway and the 1914 Lehigh Valley Barge #79 of The Waterfront Museum moored on 290 Conover St, Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY as the stage; in one scene, dockworkers haul crates onto the stage using the barge’s sling, in another, one character uses one of the barge’s hatches for a convincing stunt. This is based on the Ron Hutchinson adaptation from Miller’s original unproduced screenplay. Hutchinson turned a large gang of longshoremen into fewer individual characters with individual viewpoints, while attempting to stay true to Miller’s original screenplay set in the 1950s and having the characters speak only Miller’s lines from the original script and script notes. This is the return of Brave New World’s Sept 2020 production that was postponed due to COVID; it has adapted the Hutchinson version to cut some characters, rearrange scenes and form a new ending, but still aiming to preserve Miller’s cinematic vision using music, projections of historical photographs and noir lighting. Directed by Claire Beckman, with Nixon Cesar, Celeste Muniz, Paul Bomba. Beckman decided to cast Cesar’s character, Enzo, originally Italian, as a man of color and a Caribbean immigrant to reflect the full multicultural diversity of waterfront workers at that time. Production uses using projections and original music by composer Michelle DiBucci to evoke a nightmarish, claustrophobic sense of entrapment and paranoia.
