Hale], turning the Madonna-whore dichotomy into a triangle that included ‘Pantsuit Nation.’ I doubled the number of girls in the cast and limited their ages to the mid-teens; I started a publicity campaign that paired provocative (and mostly male) lines from the play with images of the girls in leather jackets and dark makeup; and, of course, the 50,000 Pennies campaign.” The last refers to a penny-collecting fundraiser the theater is doing for WomenSafe. Scene from production of Fractures
  • Fractures, an adaptation of A View From The Bridge 14-15 Jan. by AbOriginal Theatre in Agip Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria. Directed by Kenneth Uphopho, with Patrick Diabuah, Adesua Etomi, Ropo Ewenla, Gideon Okeke, Marcy Dolapo Oni, and Tunji Sotiminrin. This is a revival of an adaptation first performed in 2010. Call 0805 840 0042, or 0805 555 6525 or check the website. In this version, Idris and Nike live a mundane and predictable existence in the UK with their adopted daughter, Toju, until Dayo and Jide, undocumented immigrants the couple reluctantly agrees to harbor, arrive on their doorstep. A few interesting differences from Miller’s play, Dayo (now the brother of Nike rather than a cousin, and with a daughter in desperate need of money for a life-saving operation) and Jide, are friends rather than brothers. Instead of suggesting Jide is homosexual to keep him away from Toju, Idris arranges for him to marry a white woman to get his green card, but Jide backs out as he loves Toju and so Idris calls the immigration. The ending also has an unusual twist, as Dayo and Idris begin to fight each with a knife, Idris goes to strike Dayo and his wife, Nike, steps between them, and receives the death blow in their stead!
